Chapter 15

Dax

I TOLD BECCA AND MOLLY that I had left the table so I could go to the restroom, but really, I was answering yet another call from Dad, no doubt wondering where I was. I had told him we were leaving Molly’s old apartment, that we were both fine, but I hadn’t given him details of the state of the apartment yet, and I had told him only that I would call him when we got back. I was still trying to think of a way to tell him we were going to stay the night here in Boston. I knew he wasn’t going to be pleased to hear it, but it was done now. The hotel room was already booked, and anyway, even if we left right this second, we were going to be traveling at night, something I was trying to avoid.

Easy enough to make a planned attack look like an accident if it happened at night. Easy enough for people to disappear, never to be seen again.

No, we were safer staying here in Boston at this point. But that didn’t mean Dad was going to be happy about it.

“Where the hell are you?” he asked, the minute I answered the phone. “It shouldn’t have taken you this long to drive back to Greenboro, and you said you’d call as soon as you arrived.”

“We’re not coming back to Greenboro tonight,” I admitted. If I could be matter-of-fact about it, like all the decisions had already been made, then maybe I could convince him he didn’t have a say in the matter. That he couldn’t just order me back to Greenboro right now.

It was a stupid idea, sure to make him angry, I knew, but I didn’t know what else to do. I couldn’t imagine going back inside right now and telling Molly that, sorry, we really did have to leave now and head back to Greenboro. Even if I didn’t want to chance running into the Vipers in the dark.

Sure enough, though, I could hear the anger brewing in Dad’s voice when he responded. “Excuse me?”

I stuck to my guns. “We’re staying in Boston for a night. Just finishing up dinner with Becca, actually.” I paused. “You know, it’s been ages since I saw her. It sounds like she’s doing good for herself. She’s got this guy, David, and it sounds like the two of them are all set to get married. She’s got a good job too.”

It was a subtle dig. Dad was the reason it had been so long since I had seen her because family had never mattered all that much to him. But I guess it mattered in the important ways; he was doing Becca a favor because she had asked for protection for her friend. I just wished he would do a little more.

“We’re going to have a serious talk when you get home,” Dad finally growled, hanging up the phone.

It was true that I didn’t live with him anymore, and true
